Student Work Permit: Stop Getting Rejected by HR
I’ve screened ten thousand resumes. Most go straight into the digital trash.
Why? Because candidates don’t understand the rules.
You think your student work permit is just a formality. It’s not. It’s the difference between an interview and silence.
Get it wrong, and I can’t hire you. Period.

Why Your Permit Status Matters to Me
I don’t have time to decode your visa status. If you’re on an F-1 visa, I need to know you’re legal. Immediately.
Most students hide this info. Don’t.
If I have to guess if you have a work authorization for students, I move on. There are fifty other candidates who made it clear.
- State your visa type clearly.
- Mention CPT or OPT eligibility upfront.
- Don’t make me do your legal research.

CPT vs OPT: Know the Difference
Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practical Training (OPT) are not the same. Mixing them up shows me you haven’t done your homework.
CPT happens before you graduate. OPT happens after.
If you apply for a full-time role using CPT, you’re disqualified. Simple as that.

The EAD Card Is Non-Negotiable
For OPT, you need an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). No card, no job. I don’t care if your application is "pending."
I can’t onboard you without physical proof. Waiting until the last minute is a rookie mistake. Apply early.
Track your case. Have the PDF ready to send.
Warning: Working before your start date on the EAD is illegal. It voids your status. I will terminate you immediately if I find out.

Resume Mistakes That Get You Deleted
Your resume needs to scream compliance. Don’t bury your work status in the footer. Put it in the header.
I scan for keywords. If I don’t see "F-1 Visa" or "OPT Eligible," I assume you need sponsorship. And I’m not sponsoring anyone right now.
- Add "Work Authorization: OPT Eligible" under your name.
- List your EAD expiration date if you have it.
- Remove irrelevant hobbies. Focus on professional skills.

STEM Extensions: The Hidden Trap
STEM graduates get a 24-month extension. Great.
But you need to enroll in E-Verify. Not all companies do.
If I’m not in E-Verify, your STEM OPT is useless here. Check our careers page first. Don’t waste my time applying if we can’t support your extension.
This is a common oversight. Students assume every tech company is E-Verify enrolled.
We’re not. Do your due diligence.

The job market is brutal. A career opportunity slips away because of sloppy paperwork. Don’t let that be you.
Be clear. Be compliant.
Be professional. If you can’t manage your own visa details, how will you manage my projects?
