OPT Issues That Get Your Resume Deleted (And How to Fix Them)

I’ve stared at ten thousand resumes. Most go straight into the digital trash.

Why? Because candidates make it impossible for me to hire them.

If you’re an international student on F-1 status, your OPT issues are my headache. But they don’t have to be. Stop making me guess if you can legally work here.

**

Stop Hiding Your Work Authorization Status

I shouldn’t need a detective agency to figure out if you can start next Monday. If I have to dig through your education section to find your visa status, you’re already behind.

Put it at the top. Clear. Concise.

No fluff. "F-1 Student with OPT authorization valid until [Date]." Done. If I can’t see it in three seconds, I assume you’re not authorized and move on.

  • Don't: Bury it in the footer or omit it entirely.
  • Do: List "Work Authorization: OPT (EAD Card in hand)" in your header.
  • Why: It saves me time. I like saving time.

The STEM Extension Confusion Is Real

Many candidates claim 36 months of OPT but forget to mention they haven’t applied for the STEM extension yet. This is a massive red flag. It tells me you’re disorganized or lying.

Be specific. Are you on the initial 12-month period? Or do you have the full 36 months secured?

Vagueness kills career opportunity. I need to know exactly how long I can keep you without sponsoring an H-1B immediately.

Status

Duration

Risk Level for Employer

Initial OPT

12 Months

High (Sponsorship needed soon)

STEM OPT

24-Month Extension

Medium (More runway)

Gap Dates Trigger Immediate Suspicion

Unexplained gaps on your resume are bad. Unexplained gaps during OPT are fatal.

USCIS rules are strict. If you were unemployed for more than 90 days, you violated your status.

I know this. You should too. If there’s a three-month hole in your timeline, explain it.

Did you volunteer? Take a certified course? Or did you just sit around?

Honesty beats a perfect-looking lie every time. If you violated status, own it or fix it before applying. Don’t waste my time with a candidate who is already out of compliance.

ATS Resume Standard Compliance Matters

Your fancy two-column design looks great to you. To my Applicant Tracking System (ATS), it’s garbage.

The parser scrambles your text. My screen shows gibberish.

Stick to the ATS resume standard. Single column. Standard fonts.

No graphics. If the machine can’t read your professional skills, I never see them. Simple as that.

I throw these in the trash immediately. Don’t be the person who lost a job because they liked a pretty template more than readability.

Function over form. Always.

Employer Name Mismatches Cause Headaches

Your EAD card says one thing. Your resume says another.

Which is it? If you worked for a staffing agency but list the client company as your employer, clarify it.

Background checks fail because of this. I get a report that says "No record found." Now I have to investigate.

I don’t want to investigate. I want to hire.

List the legal entity that paid you. Add the client name in parentheses if you must.

But ensure the legal name matches your tax documents and EAD records. Precision prevents delays.

Common OPT Issues FAQ

Can I work while my OPT application is pending?
No. You must have the physical EAD card and a start date listed on it before you begin working. Starting early violates status.

Does volunteering count as employment for OPT?
Yes, if it’s unpaid, related to your major, and requires more than 20 hours per week. It stops the unemployment clock.

What if my OPT is denied?
You must stop working immediately. Consult your DSO. Do not attempt to work under a pending appeal unless explicitly authorized.

Fix Your Resume Before I Delete It

I’m not trying to be mean. I’m trying to be efficient.

Your OPT issues* are solvable. But only if you present them clearly and honestly.

Stop guessing. Start formatting. Make my job easy, and I might actually call you.

Try updating your header with your exact work authorization status right now. It takes two minutes.
